Volker Hoffmann: Der Geometrische Entwurf Der Hagia Sophia in Istanbul : Bilder Einer Ausstellung

Die Hagia Sophia in Konstantinopel/Istanbul wurde im Auftrag Kaiser Justinians I. in den Jahren 532-537 von den Architekten Anthemios von Tralles und Isidoros von Milet erbaut und galt schon im 6. Jahrhundert als Achtes Weltwunder. Von den Bauplanen ist nichts erhalten geblieben, und so stellt sich die Frage, wie der Wunderbau entworfen worden ist. Volker Hoffmann und Nikolaos Theocharis haben in mehrjahriger Forschungsarbeit eine Antwort auf diese Frage gesucht. Diese prasentieren sie mit 42 Plakaten erstmals 2005 an einer Ausstellung in Istanbul einem breiteren Publikum. Sie belegen, dass die Architekten von einer einzigen Entwurfsfigur (die zugleich Weltmodell ist) ausgegangen sind: von einem Quadrat mit einem In- und Umkreis. Daraus wurden streng geometrisch drei weitere Entwurfsfiguren entwickelt und aus ihnen - wiederum konsequent geometrisch - sowohl der Grundriss als auch der Aufriss des Kirchenbaus gewonnen. Neben der Rekonstruktion des Entwurfsverfahrens werden neue Einsichten in das konstruktive Denken der Architekten, die Veranderung des Bauwerkes nach 558, die griechische Mathematik und in das Zusammenspiel mit der Kosmologie mitgeteilt. Wie es scheint, symbolisiert der geometrische Entwurf zudem die Herrschaftsideologie jener Zeit, nach der die gottgegebene weltliche und geistliche Herrschaft des Kaisers und des Patriarchen immer von neuem zur Ubereinstimmung gebracht werden musste.
